Pepper and Salt Science Experiment

Static electricity is basically an electric charge which builds up on the surface of objects. There are many experiments based on static electricity. Pepper and salt science experiment is one of such experiments. This experiment involves the use of static electricity to separate pepper from the mixture of salt and pepper. This is quite a simple experiment and can be tried by anybody without much effort. It will take you just five minutes to perform the whole procedure. Children especially can find it pretty interesting and can perform this experiment at their homes.

Separate Salt And Pepper Science Fair Project :

To conduct pepper and salt science experiment you will have to follow few simple steps. All you need is a comb, pepper, salt and woolen cloth. Put some salt on a flat surface and then add some pepper to it. Mix them well with your fingertips. Now take a plastic comb and rub it against a woolen cloth. This will charge the comb with static electricity. Slowly lower this comb above the mixture till its one inch away. Soon you will see that the particles of pepper will separate from the mixture and will stick to the comb.

The reason behind such occurrence is that the plastic comb becomes negatively charged when it is rubbed against the woolen cloth. On the other hand, pepper and salt are positively charged. Pepper being lighter than salt sticks to the comb easily. You might have seen that this is pretty amazing science project and involves the use of household items, which are easily available at home. This science project can be used by school children for their science fairs. Teachers can demonstrate this pepper and salt science experiment to their pupils to make them understand static electricity in a more practical manner.
