One of the chemistry science fair experiments is to check the glow of phosphorescence using different types of light. An ultraviolet light source is the best form of light which generates the phosphorescence glow and helps to stay for a long time.
The independent variable is the kind of the lamp used and time count for the phosphorescence material to stop the glow. Other variables are the duration of time of exposure to the lamps, the output results of the lamp and the distance of the phosphorescence material from the lamp. These experiments have to be carried out in an entirely dark room.
The three pieces of materials producing phosphorescence should be kept covered in a complete dark room .The ultraviolet lamp is kept directly above the material. The phosphorescence occurs gradually, when the energy is absorbed by the material, when light is shown and the rate of release will be very slow. Thus the gradual release of light energy to the surroundings is what appears as the glow in the dark room which remains for a period of time.
You can use different types of lamps for your experiment like incandescent lamp, which emits infrared light, infrared lamp which consists of infrared energy that’s lost as heat and ultraviolet lamp consisting of ultraviolet light. The basic of the phenomena is, whenever the light is absorbed by the material the atomic electrons get excited and return to their normal stage very slowly, thus the degradation of the material makes the glow.
