Watch as a Compass Science Experiment

Most of us wear wrist watch to keep a check on time throughout the day. It has become an essential part of our lives. Without a wrist watch, things would have been difficult for us. These wrist watches are basically of two types, analog watches and digital watches. You will be amazed to know that a wrist watch can be used to find direction.

It can be of great help if you get lost in a wilderness, or in some remote place. You can find direction with the help of analog watches only. A digital watch cannot be used to find direction. The watch as a compass science experiment is one of such experiments which involve the use of wrist watch to find direction.

To perform the watch as a compass science experiment, you will have to follow few simple steps. All you will need is an analog wrist watch and a blade of grass, or a matchstick. Point your hand towards the sun’s direction with your wrist watch in a horizontal position. Now place the matchstick or the blade of grass on middle of your wrist watch. This matchstick or the blade of grass will work as a pointer. It should be halfway between the 12 and the hour hand. The matchstick or the blade of grass will be pointing towards the south direction.

You may have seen that the watch as a compass science experiment is quite simple to perform and anybody can try this experiment. Although this method may not give you an accurate result like a compass, but knowing this experiment can prove to be quite beneficial. Those who get lost in a jungle or a mountainous region can use this method to find right direction. Children can try this experiment with their wrist watches and find it pretty interesting.
